Nyakach, Kisumu
Mama Achieng learned her rows from her mother, who learned them from hers. Thirty-four seasons on the same three acres above Nyakach, close enough to the lake that the morning arrives as mist rather than light.
Rangwe, Homa Bay
Joseph came back to Rangwe from Nairobi in 2004 with a hoe and a theory: that the red, light soil of his father's plot could grow cassava that cooked floury instead of watery. Twenty-one seasons later, he has been proven right often enough to stop arguing about it.
Kabondo, Homa Bay
Grace grows what the market forgot: mto, susa, akeyo, dek. Twelve years ago she planted a bed of them for her own kitchen. Now the bed is a field, and half of Kabondo buys seedlings from her.
